Integrating depth sensing and computationalfunctions into embedded camera modules could rake in a billion of additionalshipments by 2017, according to a report from Woodside Capital Partners.
The report estimates that 1.2 billioncomputational cameras will ship in smartphones, in addition to the 1.5 billionimage sensors.
Smartphone shipment
It is believed that the addition of depthinformation and computation will become the point of differentiation forembedded cameras. This computation can be used to increase dynamic range,improve low-light image capture and improve image focus. And it can be used forgesture recognition and the human–machine interface and as part of augmentedreality systems that overlay third-party information on the captured scene.
This provides opportunities throughout thesupply chain from sensors—from capturing depth information as well as light topackaging and modules, and from image processors to software and systemsengineering.
Overall embedded camera shipment
While many of these possibilities can beseen in the mobile electronic equipment market they are also likely to betransformative in the broader consumer electronics market such as smart TVs,and in automotive electronics, Woodside Capital Partners reckons.
